History of Cinderella Ball

A group of people in formal wear dancing.

Held virtually every year since 1924, Cinderella Ball is a longstanding tradition in the Pittsburgh community. Sponsored by the Cinderella Womens Committee, the Cinderella Ball represents the culmination of our debutantes completion of the Leadership Forum for Young Women program which includes experiences for personal development, service to our primary beneficiary and other community organizations. This Ball is proud to carry the distinction and tradition of being the oldest charity event in Pittsburgh and one of the longest-running debutante balls in America.

Sponsored by the Cinderella Women’s Commitee, Cinderella Ball is a magical evening focused on family, friends and philanthropy. With each ball benefiting a different Pittsburgh-area charitable organization a wide variety of guests are drawn yearly to the event to support both the debutantes and our beneficiary. A scholarship is awarded to the debutante who has completed the highest number of volunteer hours.

In traditional cotillion style, debutantes are presented for recognition on the arms of their fathers or presenter at the Ball, ready to join an alumni network of accomplished women who have been presented before her, and establish lifelong relationships for the future.

During the presentation, those in attendance eagerly await the announcement of the year chosen Prince Charming, a young bachelor whose name is a well-kept secret until he makes his formal entrance at the ball. Prince Charming then randomly selects one of the debutantes to be his Cinderella by pulling her name from a beautifully decorated pumpkin before whisking her to the dance floor for a waltz. One of the most notable men to serve as Prince Charming, a young Henry John Heinz III, later served Pennsylvania as a United States Senator. Then after the Father/Daughter Waltz and the Grand March, an elegant seated dinner is followed by dancing until the stroke of midnight.

Cinderella Ball currently supports local civic and charitable organizations in a two-fold manner: financially and through the debutantes volunteer efforts. In addition, the CWC awards a scholarship to the debutante who has contributed the most volunteer hours and has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to volunteer leadership.
